UNIVA and Oak, the Dawn of a New World

On October 1, Oak Capital Co., Ltd. changed its name to UNIVA Oak Holdings Limited. And starting this October, UNIVA CAPITAL Group's internal newsletter "UNI-SIGHT" will be distributed to UNIVA Oak and its affiliated companies.

This name change is very significant for UNIVA CAPITAL and UNIVA Oak. In this issue, we interview Chairman Inaba, Toshiaki Muneyuki, COO of UNIVA Oak, and Shosei Asakura, Chief Branding Officer of UNIVA Group, about the background of the UNIVA Oak name change and the future outlook for the entire UNIVA Group.

Why borne Oak with "UNIVA"?

Asakura: Inaba-san became the representative of Oak Capital in June 2021, and it has been two years. May I ask how you came to change the name of the company, including the review during this time?

Inaba: First, to review both companies, UNIVA CAPITAL Group is not an investment fund. Under the philosophy of "Unite the Values," we are a "federated corporate group" that supports business growth with 61 companies in 15 businesses in 16 countries/regions. Oak, on the other hand, is a publicly traded company that holds various businesses, including investment banking, clean energy, beauty and healthcare. For the past two years, UNIVA and Oak have been working together to create value for the entire group with its operating companies under the philosophy of "Value Co-Creation Company". The same is true of Univa Gyron and Univa Fusion as subsidiaries of Oak. But it is not easy to instill a new philosophy. Especially for a company like Oak, which has a long history and has become a publicly traded company, it is difficult for changes in management's thoughts and policies to reach the company. The primary reason we decided to change our company name was to advocate our future prospects as the new UNIVA Oak.

Asakura: I see. Nevertheless, I was honestly surprised by the decision to bear the company name "UNIVA".

Inaba: Certainly, we have received advice from various experts that it would be better to put the crown of "UNIVA" a little later. However, we cannot afford to wait too long for time to pass. I thought that the "UNIVA" crown was needed now more than ever to strengthen the value co-creation of UNIVA and Oak, respectively. For example, when UNIVA and Oak collaborate on business, they may feel uneasy; or employees on the UNIVA side may feel alienated from becoming a subsidiary of Oak, as if they were "moving to another company." But having both crowned UNIVA should eliminate such negative feelings and ensure the cohesiveness of the group as a whole.

Asakura: So "UNIVA" will play a role like the keystone of a fan. From now on, it's all about consolidation!

Company Name Change Necessary for Business Growth

Asakura: Mr. Muneyuki, as the COO of UNIVA Oak, how do you see the name change?

Muneyuki: I think Inaba is right, the company name change was necessary to strengthen the cooperation between Oak and UNIVA. It is not only about management philosophy, but also has a significant practical impact. Oak moved its main financial business to Sterling Securities about two years ago, and is now making a transition to other diversified business operations. Moreover, in fact, Sterling Securities' experience and track record in various types of businesses in the financial business has also been useful. If you only provide financial services, it is difficult to differentiate yourself from competitors and have people choose your company. In this environment, our differentiation lies in the fact that we can talk with the owners and top management of listed companies, our main clients, about management issues and other matters from a business perspective. With this name change, we hope to further strengthen the collaboration between Oak and UNIVA to accelerate the speed of growth for both.

Asakura: I thought that the company name change was mostly a philosophical discussion! I see, so the company name change was necessary from a practical standpoint as well. Indeed, for Oak, it is a banner of moving away from finance. The goal is for each company to accelerate the growth of each other's business while doing their own business based on a shared philosophy. I look forward to what lies ahead.

Muneyuki: The fusion of the two companies has already begun. For example, Mr. Ubatani, President of UNIVA JAPAN, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of North Energy, a subsidiary of Oak, and has been deeply involved in the company to see the business. UNIVA JAPAN is also working with North Energy on a project in Horokanai Town, Hokkaido.

Asakura: Are there any plans for collaboration between the two companies or new business together in the near future?

Inaba: UNIVA Oak, which is a publicly traded company, can do more investment banking and other services, which is advantageous. But will the companies on the UNIVA CAPITAL side soon become part of UNIVA Oak? It is not. However, it is UNIVA CAPITAL that can move with speed and light footwork. Our priority now is to "get the best of both worlds" and grow by using both companies in a positive way.

Asakura: The food and beverage revitalization business is truly "taking the best of both worlds," isn't it?

Inaba: Yes! UNIVA CAPITAL was responsible for the restaurant that opened at GINZA SIX in August 2023. Due to the location, competition was stiff and speed was required. So first, UNIVA CAPITAL invests and executes the store opening plan. When the investment yield becomes clear, it can be transferred to Re-Dining Co., Ltd. under Oak to accelerate the speed of store openings. Private companies and listed companies collaborate to "get the best of both worlds". It's strong to be able to do this. If we can increase the value we can provide to society, we will reach the position we desire!

Asakura: What about personnel exchange? I think this is where NAKAMA's interests and concerns lie.

Inaba: At the moment, we are not thinking about personnel exchange. But I would like to make opportunities. Currently, transfers between UNIVA CAPITAL groups are quite common. We hope to help individuals step up and advance their careers.

Asakura: If people share the same philosophy, interaction will naturally increase, relationships will deepen, and the business will grow. It is truly an ideal body of value co-creation.

The Destination of the Word "UNIVA"

Asakura: Now, UNIVA CAPITAL has been in business for 18 years. Could you talk about the "UNIVA worldview" once again from your own mouth, Mr. Inaba?

Inaba: We have been conveying the UNIVA WAY to "NAKAMA" and our business partners for a long time, aiming at our philosophy of "Realization of Co-Creation Capitalism" and "Realization of World Peace". And today, October 1, is the day to release the word "UNIVA" to the world. Oak has approximately 18,000 stakeholders, including public shareholders. It is very meaningful to be able to bring the name and philosophy of UNIVA to these people. This is a big step toward the realization of co-creation capitalism. This is not something one person can do alone. It is something we all win together. We would like to spread this message of "Unite the Values - Integrate values to create a society that generates high growth" more widely throughout the world.

Asakura: Lastly, Mr. Muneyuki, could you give a message to our readers, "NAKAMA"?

Muneyuki: The Oak in our company name is a large tree, known as an oak in Japan, and is a symbol of "toughness," "vitality," and "growth. Today I would like to announce a corporate slogan that gives new meaning to Oak.

Optimize and Activate business value through Knowledge
〜Optimize and revitalize business through the wisdom of individuals and organizations

The three letters "OAK" are inscribed with the aspiration to actively promote collaboration and synergy with other companies. In order to realize co-creation capitalism together, please try to get to know each other with a sense of "NAKAMA". I hope to "broaden your horizons and raise your eyes" and get you interested in a variety of businesses and people.

Asakura: There is a large river between the UNIVA and Oak lands, but now it feels as if there is a liaison ship that can travel freely between them. Eventually a bridge will be built and traffic will become more frequent. What kind of chemical reactions will be created in the future? It is exciting. Thank you, Mr. Inaba and Mr. Muneyuki. Change is evolution.
