Live Now

Since the start of the 21st century, there have been the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, and the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Terrible events continue to occur every ten years. Now, with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we hear talk of the start of a third world war. The likelihood of a giant earthquake in the Nankai Trough, an eruption of Mt. Fuji, an earthquake directly under Tokyo, or another major natural disaster is high.

On the other hand, futurologists expect the next century to see humanity experience at least two transformations as large as those that marked the thousands of years from the invention of agriculture to the Internet. Statistical indices suggest that revolutions in quantum computing, artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented and virtual realities. and nanotechnology will all become realities. Combinations of these technologies will transform society in unpredictable ways. Nobody can predict with confidence what tomorrow will bring.

Having achieved renown as one of the world’s greatest statisticians, the scientific genius Masaru Tomita questioned from a statistical perspective the narrative that describes evolution as a process that began four billion years ago with the appearance of the first life forms and has continued through mutation and natural selection ever since. He turned, then, to the study of molecular biology.

Tomita believes that, statistically speaking, four billion years is not enough for the organisms on today’s earth to have evolved through random combinations at the amino-acid level. The age of the visible universe would not be long enough. Thus, some other force must have been at work. Francis Crick, the discoverer of DNA, speculated that life was brought to earth from outer space. Masaru Tomita says that biology is filled with puzzles and that he is confident that the field will make at least two discoveries as important as the realization that the Earth is a sphere.

I believe that living as we do in utterly unpredictable times, we must ask ourselves if we have the flexibility to adapt to all sorts of changes in our environments and live knowing that every moment is important. I hope that we all can continue to pray for a peaceful world, take care of our mental and physical health, and focus on each day as it comes.
