Revolutionizing User Engagement through Mobile App Development

From May to August, UNI-SQUARE is introducing the UNIVA AWARDS 2022 Outstanding Company/Person of the Year. In the August issue, we present Varun Bhalerao of Naturally Plus Singapore (NPSG). Varun, the youngest group member introduced in the February issue of UNI-SQUARE, has been awarded the laurel of UNIVA AWARDS 2022 for his outstanding performance in developing mobile apps and user engagement. We delve into Varun's journey, exploring the challenges he faced, the achievements he accomplished, and his ongoing initiatives to enhance user experience.

The Youngest, Sole Developer to Join the Company

When Varun joined NPSG, the company faced numerous issues with its original online store. The website was unstable and lacked integration with the company's internal system (NAVI), forcing members to create separate accounts. Tasked with developing a mobile app that addressed these problems, Varun embarked on a journey to create a stable, user-friendly, and connected platform.

"When I joined NPSG, I was told this was a very high-impact role. I didn't understand what it meant then because this was my first ever job, and I had just graduated. But over time, I realized that I had to give active inputs in how the app would be made, how it would be, what features would be in the app, and so on. Also, to know that the bigger projects would require time and approval.

The idea of this mobile app was a whole new initiative by my manager. He had a website built during Covid, but he wasn't a developer. He also had other responsibilities on a separate project. At that point, he needed someone else to come in and do it professionally and focus on the app project rather than him trying to juggle many different things. The idea was not very concrete when I joined, but we started working on it on the first day; many things happened during the development process that made that initial plan change a lot."

Varun's opinions and ideas were well respected as a professional developer. Despite being the first remote employee for NPSG, the team always had good communication.

"I had a say on what the app will be, at least to a certain point; that is not very common in more prominent companies when you have teams of developers, but because I'm the only developer, I got that responsibility. Some ideas regarding how the payment method should work and how we should have our admin site; I could choose what platform and what coding language to use.

Regarding features, I had much say in which one comes first, the priority of different parts, how they should be designed and be created, and how they should all work together. When I say it, it sounds very technical, but even making that decision is on me. That allows me to expand and even learn, making my job fun. It gives me the creative freedom to make the thing the best I can rather than wait for seven approvals down the line, right?"

Collaborating with his manager, Tan Han Wei, involved dynamic and evolving roles. Both Varun and Han Wei have been integral to the various aspects of the app's development and growth, continually adapting to new responsibilities as they arise.

"When I first joined NPSG, Han Wei was the primary point of contact for our customers, actively engaging with them to understand their needs better," Varun explained. "However, as we launched the app and it began to mature, I also started to directly communicate with the customer support staff, ensuring we could respond quickly and effectively to our users' concerns. That said, Han Wei remains deeply involved in the product's ongoing development."

In fact, while Varun is the hands-on developer, Han Wei's role is crucial in product feature prioritization. They collaborate closely in liaison with the customer service department to assess feature requests and decide which ones will bring the most value to users.

"Han Wei is always striving to ensure we deliver a product that our customers genuinely need," Varun added. "He regularly conducts interviews with customers and gathers feedback from our team. This hands-on approach is invaluable in guiding our development process and ensuring that everything we build genuinely addresses our users' needs."

Moreover, Han Wei has played a pivotal role in handling third-party issues. When problems arise with external entities such as Google, Apple, Stripe, Singpass, or SGLocate, it is Han Wei who takes the lead in resolving them, ensuring the smooth operation of the app.

"The development of the app is indeed my domain," Varun acknowledges, "But Han Wei's role is equally critical. If there are significant updates, he's the one getting approval. If we need a UI designer, he is the one to contact them. If we need to launch a new feature, he is behind the promotional materials. And when we encounter issues with third parties, he is the one resolving them. Our roles are vast and varied, and both of us contribute to the app's growth in our unique ways."

As such, while the roles Varun and Han Wei play in the app's life may have evolved over time, both remain integral to its ongoing development and success.

Mobile App Release, Challenges, and Achievements

At the beginning of 2022, NPSG successfully launched its mobile app, marking a significant milestone in its digital transformation journey. However, the road to success was challenging. Immediately after the app's launch, an unforeseen issue with Google caused the app to be temporarily shut down. Nevertheless, the problem was resolved through effective communication and collaboration with Google, allowing the app to resume operations.

"The app was initially supposed to be completed in six months, but just as we launched the beta version, an issue with Google happened, and it wasn't our fault or anything. It was something to do with the billing payment for our database, and the app would not work with our database. So there were some issues with the billing payment, and it took us 2-3 weeks to sort that out. Luckily, that was not when we had many users. We had a couple of high-tier members testing the app, but that set us back at least one month. That was the beta period."

The development process encountered a significant hurdle when the API (Application Programming Interface) required for internal system integration needed to be fully developed. Undeterred, Varun collaborated with a UI designer to create and test the app's interface with actual members. The positive feedback from these tests boosted confidence in the app's usability.

“What we were going to do with NP API one year ago, we are doing it now, one year later. Initially, we were waiting for the information from the NP API team, but we realized that if it takes too long, there's no point just sitting still on this product, right? The app can be more manual because it's not directly through the NP API, but we launched it anyway, and now we can finally integrate the entire data into the NP API.”

The launch of the mobile app proved to be a turning point for NPSG. Within months, the app started surpassing the sales generated by the website, prompting the company to shift its focus entirely to the app. The app's stability and enhanced user experience contributed to a remarkable increase in sales. From February 2021 to December 2021, online sales reached 1,755,034 SGD, while during the same period in 2022, sales rose to 2,051,372 SGD, representing a notable 16.8% growth.

User Engagement, App Features, and Future Plans

While Varun's approach to development was certainly innovative, it was Han Wei's creative vision that led to a significant stride in user engagement. Han Wei conceptualized NP Coins, a unique digital reward/point system, and worked closely with Varun to bring it to fruition. The system incentivized app usage, with members earning coins for purchases made through the app. These coins could then be used for Lucky Draws and product redemption. This innovative strategy led to a significant surge in user engagement. The introduction of NP Coins resulted in a 156% increase in participation between two Lucky Draws held in August 2022 and December 2022, demonstrating the effectiveness of Han Wei's idea and the successful collaboration with Varun to execute it.

"We currently have around 500 plus users. That was our initial goal, to get 500 members. The number seems very small for an app, but first of all, it's Singapore. So, we are looking at a narrower demographic within our members compared to other regions. Also, enticing members to download the app took a little time for older generations. We are still trying to push, and the number is slowly increasing. We hope to have at least a thousand users the next time when we speak.

I'll take the example of our Lucky Draw during those times. We don't have those statistics for our daily active users right now, but we have received orders or interactions from more than 350 members on average. You must have interactive approaches to using the app and active users who purchase every two or three weeks. There are 10,15 of those who, every few weeks, buy something new. Those are very active users."

The app's features played a pivotal role in enhancing user experience. The app significantly lowered entry barriers and improved operational efficiency by enabling members to use their existing login credentials, incorporating PayNow as a payment option, and streamlining form-filling and validation processes. The app's core features included bulk payments, member ID login, multiple address storage, and an in-built coin shop.

“We are still adding the features upon the business member's request. One feature we worked on was the introduction code, which many members requested. And there are some other things that we are still bottlenecked by NP API and the resources we have, and we are trying our best with what we have. For example, a feature we wanted to add, and we had already designed it, but we still needed the functions, is an organization chart. All members requested the feature, but sadly, the function is only available for the Japan site, and we cannot add it. We can't work on that independently because we are dependent on the NP API to give us the data.

A significant feature we have been working on is NP 101, a series of tutorials and training videos for new employees showing how the company works and the business model. We just designed the UI from scratch and now kickstarted the development of it.

One last feature we are working on is showing all kinds of achievement points. I know there's a separate app for that. It would be great to show them within our app.”

To streamline the processes and expand its user base, Varun focuses on two key projects and prioritizing product quality.

“My current project is to make the entire app controllable via a Windows application since I'm also handling all the configuration and settings for the app. We are developing the Windows app so that customer support staff can directly make changes when needed without having to ask me to do it. We want to ensure we spend much more time developing and not dealing with configurations. I'm also working on the NP 2.0 project involving order creation in the NP API. These are the two main projects we are working towards, and we are trying to release them around July.

We realized early on that adding features members don't want is useless. Enhancing the quality of the product will inevitably lead to more people using it. We aim to reduce transaction costs even further and grow our user base. We currently have 500 users, but with 2.3 million SGD in annual revenue, there is definitely activity. We are letting the growth be organic right now, and as the app evolves, more members will download it. Our estimate is to have a thousand users within another year.”

Varun and his team have ambitious plans for the app's future development. They are available to expand this app to other Naturally Plus regions. By doing so, regions without an online app could use NP infrastructure to help increase or start their online revenue.

“We are open to expanding and have contacted the Korea Branch, but sadly, it didn't work out. We are looking at other branches, such as Malaysia, for potential collaboration. Our team is prepared to accommodate various regions' business requirements and policies, create versions in different languages, and take on all development overheads and costs.

We are committed to tailoring the app to specific regional needs by developing apps for other regions. By taking on all development expenses, we aim to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with our partners, offering different compensation models like annual subscriptions or per-order payments, depending on the region.”

All members of NPSG are aware of Varun's ambitious plan and display strong support. The environment at NPSG fosters collaboration and mutual encouragement for the app's growth.
